Read MoreGood News for Alice Bliss, the musical
Some wonderful news for Alice Bliss, the musical. Our team – Jenny Giering (music), Adam Gwon (lyrics), Laura Harrington (book) – has been invited for a week long residency at the Weston Playhouse in Weston, VT during the first week of May. This is a great opportunity and it is occurring at just the right time for us. Our first week-long residency was in February at Goodspeed Musicals, courtesy of the Johnny Mercer Foundation. We revised our outline and wrote 6 scenes and 4 songs. In another week of concentrated work in Weston, we hope to make major progress. We will, once again, be sharing a house together in a beautiful location and working very long days. The end of our week will culminate in an evening event where we will share a few scenes and...

Read MorePinterest for Novelists: Inspiration? Book Design? Book Trailers?
When I first started hearing about Pinterest, I thought: Are you kidding me? There’s something else we’re supposed to be doing to connect to our readers/ build our platform? I was sure I didn’t have one more iota of available brain space for anything that was not actually writing. And then my writing hit a snag. I was about half way through my second novel when I slowed to a halt. Had I lost my writing mind to too much Twitter and Facebook? Or did I need some inspiration? I am a very visual person. Part of this stems from my theatre background; part of it is my lifelong love of design and image. I was an art history minor in college and worked at a museum and a prints and drawings gallery between college and grad school. I decided to take a look at...
Read MoreThe Wounds of War: Hidden in Plain Sight
What do we know about the wars that we are waging? The vast majority of us can choose not to pay attention, as if this choice is similar to choosing what toothpaste to buy or what television program to watch. What role does our distraction play in these conflicts? If we aren’t watching, can we be held responsible? When a war can last longer than a decade and requires neither our attention nor our participation, what does this do to our national identity? What do the words civic responsibility and service and sacrifice mean to those of us living in America now? What does it mean to “support our troops” if our support is as simple and as meaningless as parroting an empty phrase? The faded bumper stickers on our SUVs are a band-aid that can’t cover our...
